It took me 3 years to get permission to photograph this sole Madagascar AF Super Rallye, about the history of which I was not able to find much despite a big research effort (so any information would be appreciated). Also, I have never seen it flying between 2002 and 2005 (when I stayed in Madagascar), even though the batch behind the cockpit says "Sécurisation", revealing the aircraft's main role would be restoring law and order, mainly by fighting "cow chiefs", a common and huge problem in remote places of Madagascar. Fate of this airframe is unknown.

In 2003 and 2004, the Government of Madagascar contracted at least two companies to carry out seismic surveys throughout the so called "red" island. FUGRO was one of them, which had this australian registered Aero Commander sent over to Madagascar. This very aircraft was built in 1970 and was on the australian register for all it's life, before being withdrawn from use in 2008 and consequently broken up. See photo ID 326405 for another aircraft being used for seismic surveys in Madagascar at the same time.

5R-MKT was the second AS-350 to join the Helimission fleet in 1985, back then as HB-XPN. It was based in Cameroon between 1986 and 1997. It spent a few years in Switzerland before being transferred to Madagascar, where it is stationed since 2004. In 2006, it was upgraded to the BA version by Panterra in Canada.

A nice surprise visitor to TNR was this German AF Challenger, one of seven operated by the GAF to transport ministers and high ranking military personnel between 1984 and 2011. Air Madagascar - till 2012 a staunch Boeing customer as far as jetliners are concerned - wrote history when it started to operate this ex Air France A340 in April 2012, followed by sistership 5R-EAA (ex F-GLZT) two month later. The two planes were said to have been overpriced and linked with some safety and EASA certification issues, Air Madagascar continues to struggle financially up to this day. As a counter measure, this airframe has been registered in Island as TF-EAB (from March 2013) and Air Atlanta did operate it on behalf of Air Madagascar. Parked at the time of upload.

On behalf of the US Government, the USAF operates a handful of Hurons for diplomatic duties. Those aircraft are assigned to various US Embassies around the world and are used to transport officials around in the corresponding regions. This Huron was assigned to the US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya when this picture was taken and got grounded in Madagascar during an offical visit due to one of it's engines producing metal chips.

However, it has been chartered by the Government of Madagascar for seismic surveys throughout the "red" island, hence the two wingtip-mounted pods carrying the corresponding sensors to do so. Tiko was the company of Marc Ravalomanana, a successful business man and Madagascar's president between 2002 and 2009. Tiko was active in the food industry, and from 2001 this CN235 was used to distribute the locally manufactured dairy prodcuts throughout Madagascar. However, being one of the oldest CN235, it encountered a lot of technical issues with its Garrett engines, and was therefore sold on to Presidental Airways in the US in 2006. Still active with AAR Airlift Group as N1269J at the time of upload. Tiko Air replaced 5R-MKM with an ATR-42 registered 5R-MJT.
