Orginally an RAAF base, Mangalore was developed after the Second World War as a diversion aerodrome for when Melbourne/Essendon was fogged in, its location north of the Great Dividing Range giving it good weather when the weather in Melbourne was bad. The field is much as it was then, except the hangars closest in the photo which are of relatively recent construction. The nearest runway is 1461m 18/36 with 2027m 05/23 behind, the photo looking west.

One of the best strips around Melbourne - looking down the 4,500 ft runway 18 with the town of Sunbury at upper left. Note the Sting crossing the intersection with 4,000 ft runway 12/30. Since there are a lot of ultralights based here contra-circuits are in use with ultralights to the East and GA to the West.

Spotters delight! At the international terminal, working clockwise from the Singapore's Star Alliance B747-412 9V-SPP at the bottom are: Malaysian B777-2H6/ER 9M-MRQ; Thai A340-541 HS-TLA; Qantas B747-438 VH-OJM; and Austrian B777-2Z9/ER OE-LPA. Note also the Eastern Dash 8 lining up on Runway 27 at the top and, unusually, the other Eastern Dash 8 taxing to the Freight Apron at the bottom. To complete the picture, the 'Queensland Virgin', VH-VOJ is parked at the Virgin finger.

Over-view to the south-west of historic Point Cook aerodrome. On the southern boundary is the former First World War-vintage seaplane station and jetty, with the modern base area on the western boundary. Point Cook is Australia's oldest operating aerodrome. Land was first purchased for use as a military aerodrome in early 1913 and the Central Flying School opened here shortly afterwards. Today home to the RAAF Museum, you can see two of their Hercules if you look hard!

Taking off from CDG on the return flight to EMA gave this view over Terminal 1. To the left of the tower two TAM A330 can be seen. On T1 there is a Flybe ERJ 190 and two Dash 8 along with a PIA 777, probably AP-BHV, an Air China A330, reg not known and a French AF A310. Behind those are a French AF A310, and A340 along with a B767 N606TW which appeared to be a military charter. Help with any other identities would be welcomed

Temora aerodrome, site of the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's National Fly-in for 2008, looking north west with the shorter Runway 18/36 closest. You can see the extensive buildings of the Temora Aviation Museum at the southern end of the apron, with David Lowy's Gulfstream V parked on its special pad in front of his house. Just to the south of that is GAF Canberra A84-223. There are a few antique aircraft already lined up on the grass, but we were one of the fairly early arrivals.

On returning to Nottingham East Midlands on one of Ryanair's 1 penny (1c US, 1c Eu) flights from Prague, we flew straight over Leicester in Boeing 737-800, EI-DYK. This airfield at Staughton is under threat as there are controversial plans to build a new town on this and vast swathes of the surrounding countryside, a so-called eco town, an excuse for massive urban expansion. It would be a shame to see it go

Tocumwal was once the largest aerodrome in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in record time in the dark days of February 1942 as a USAAF bomber base for the inland defence of Australia and named McIntyre Field, it originally covered 8 square miles. Taken over by the RAAF in Nov 42 and used as a Liberator OTU, one of the giant bomber hangars can still be seen to the right in this photo. Post-war used as a collection point for the scrapping of many surplus RAAF aircraft.
