This retired bomber is actually the seventh B-1B built, 83-0070 '7 Wishes', but it wears '85074', masquerading as 85-0074.

34 B-47E bombers were converted for weather reconaissance work in the early 1960s. They carried no armament, an instrument pod in the bomb bay and cameras in the nose to photograph cloud formations. The WB-47Es were retired in the fall of 1969.

It looks like a white elephant, and I'm surprised to read that almost 450 examples of the Globemaster II served in the US Air Force between 1950 and 1974.

This early Starfighter crashed on 22 August 1957 after engine failure on-take-off from Eglin AFB. The aircraft was struck off charge that same day but was restored for static display and is now inside at the Hill Aerospace Museum.

Following its four years display in the Canada Aviation & Space Museum in Ottawa, MN235 is here seen in the BoBMF hangar at Coningsby. Eventually it will return to the the RAF Museum collection.

This tradition of naming dates from WW2 when Lady Rachel MacRobert lost sons in RAF service. She first donated £25,000 for the purchase of a Stirling bomber which was named "MacRobert's Reply". Later, following the loss of her second son in the Middle East leading an attack by Hurricanes against a German airfield, she donated a further £20,000 to purchase 4 Hurricanes, one of which was called "The MacRobert Fighter - Sir Roderick". This title has now passed to a Typhoon of 6 Squadron.

RAF Memorial Flight

This Lightning served in the Aleutians from May 1944. Unable to find back his base on Attu, pilot Lt Arthur Kidder made a skilful belly landing on Buldir Island on 2 February 1945. Although subsequently used as a practice target, the aircraft was salvaged in 1994 and restored, to be put on display in the Hill Aerospace Museum.
