The original Buttercup was built by Steve Wittman in 1938. Production rights were sold to Fairchild Aircraft but due to wartime obligations, they did not develop the design. This replica version was designed by EAA member Earl Luce for home builders.

Rescued from a scrap yard in 1970, Ben Hall rebuilt former USAF 48-178 using parts from another F-86A and a lot of man-hours. Flying in the UK as G-SABR for over twenty years, the oldest jet still flying returned to the USA in 2014. It was finally able to make an appearance at the EAA Air Adventure in 2017.

This aircraft is on display outdoors in the center of Havana in the rear section of the Museo de la Revolución.

Built as a SD-360 for lease to Air UK and delivered December 14, 1984 as G-BLPV. Later flying with Loganair and City Flyer Express. Returned to Short Brothers in November 1993, the aircraft was converted to a C-23B with the replacement of the rear fuselage with a new build SD-330 tail. Delivered to US Department of the Army as 93-1328 October 1995. The United States Forest Service bought the aircraft April 17, 2014.
