In Spring 1997, the Cottbus Flugplatzmuseum was asked to recover a real Fw190! The aircraft was found under a mount of sand and concrete waste at Finsterwalde, a former Soviet air base in East Germany. On 20 April 1945, the Fw190 was buried when it maintenance hangar at Finsterwalde was blown up by retreating German troops. Upon recovery, the identity of the Fw190 was discovered and it now on display with the museum.
