Originally designated as X-1-2. Converted to an X-1E in order to pursue the goals originally set for the X-1D and X-1-3 which were lost to explosions in 1951. First flew in 1955. Assigned to NACA High-Speed Flight Research Station, later the High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards AFB, CA. Permanently grounded after its 26th flight in 1958, due to the discovery of structural cracks in the fuel tank wall. Later put on display at Edwards AFB.

Used as a test aircraft at Muroc AAB, CA. the old name for Edwards AFB. Used as a ZF-59B drone from 1945 to 1947. Damaged in an accident in 1948. Restored and put on display.

Delivered to NASA as NASA 811 in 1963. Later given registration N811NA. Last flight in 1987 and stored at Edwards AFB. Moved to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, AZ by 1997 for preservation.

Stored at Davis-Monthan AFB with park code FB056 in 1976. Left in 1982 and went to Mojave, CA for restoration. Is thought to be the aircraft preserved at Castle AFB, CA from 1986 as 71318 then 71312.

Unfortunately they would not let us take a photo from the sunny side. Delivered to the USAAF as 43-49526 in 1944. To NASA as NASA 501/N501NA in 1950. Reregistered as N636NA in 1971, N817NA in 1979 and N827NA in 1983. To Fairchild AFB, WA for preservation two months after this photo was taken.

Delivered to NASA as N7NA in 1982. Still current with them in 2021.

Preserved at Lancaster-WJ Fox Field from 1969. Moved to Edwards AFB in 2003.

Former USAF 54-0136. Stored at Mojave from 1973. Registered as N136AB in 1974 but painted as N136AR. Registration cancelled in 2012. Still visible there on the satellite image in 2021.

Delivered to Aerotransporto Litoral Argentino as LV-PKB then reregistered as LV-JGX in 1968. Renamed to Austral in 1971. Cockpit destroyed by fire at Buenos Aires in 1978. To Tiger Air as N128TA, repaired using the nose of c/n 058 and flown to the USA in 1979. It was registered with c/n 058. To Gulfstream American as N128GA in 1981. Stored at Mojave. Scrapped in 1989.
