Nose section of "Fertile Myrtile" inside the hangar at Fantasy of Flight. Delivered to the USAAF with s/n 45-21787, it was one of four B-29s transferred to the US Navy for long range search operations with the designation P2B-1S. BuNo 84029 was loaned to NACA where it was converted to a mothership to launch the D-558-II Skyrocket. Test pilot Scott Crossfield was the first to exceed Mach 2 on 20 Nov 1953 after release of the Skyrocket from the P2B. His signature with "MACH 2" below it can be seen next to the nose art. D-558-II NACA 144 and NACA 145 launches are represented on the panels. This photo is copyright © Arjun Sarup, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
