In the early 70s, International carriers were replacing 707s with wide bodies like the 747. Second tier carriers became homes for many, BWIA eventually operating thirteen of them. Scarlet Ibis was in their fleet March 1974 - February 1982. Leases as N29796 and N144SP followed until April 13, 1987 when the Burlington Air Express freighter crashed short of the runway at Kansas City International Airport, MO.
