A dramatic photo made by Daniel Camus or Jean Péraud: Dien Bien Phu is under artillery fire while this C-47 is taxiing for take-off to Tan Son Nhut. After landing, 18 impacts were checked on the fuselage. As 42-92457, this C-47 flew paratroopers to Sainte-Mère-Église, Normandy on D-Day. It is listed as destroyed at Gia Lam in Indochina on 28 November 1954. Photo from: ECPAD

'The Hiller 360 medical helicopter flown by Capt Dr Valérie André, during a medical evacuation in Tonkin' - this is the northernmost part of Vietnam. Early Hillers had marginal power and that is probably why the pilot was also a doctor! This was one of the first two helicopters in French Indochina, flown initially as F-OAHA and F-OAHB (c/n 133). They were acquired by the French army, but operated by the air force. The army allocated administrative serials 8.000.009 and 8.000.005, respectively. Photo from: ECPAD

The first helicopters in French Indochina were two Hiller 360s in 1950. Four similar H-23As were taken over from the US Army in early 1952, and 51-16120 was one of them. The H-23A had quickly been withdrawn from the war in Korea. The French installed uprated engines later on. The ambulance pods seem to be the same as in photo 676511 and they were not practical. Photo taken somewhere in Cochinchina, the southernmost part of Vietnam. This airframe survives at La Ferté-Alais! Photo by: Raoul Coutard / ECPAD

A nice photo of another French S-55 in Indochina, this time landing at the Lanessan Hospital in Hanoi with released prisoners of war. The helicopter is listed as lost only nine days later, on 24 July 1954 at Dien Bien Phu, although the fighting there was over. The hospital is now Vietnam's Central Military Hospital 108. Photo taken during the Battle of Dien Bien Phu at Strongpoint Isabelle, 'a dismal patch of marshes and swamp' 6 km to the south of the town, where there was an auxiliary airstrip. Killed soldiers are visible in the uncropped picture. Supplies appear to be parachuted in in the background. The helicopter is ex USAF 52-7595, which was shipped to Vietnam in January 1954. It is listed as lost at Dien Bien Phu on 23 March, one week after this photo was taken by either Jean Péraud or Daniel Camus. Photo from: ECPAD
