Ex-5Y-BER, 204/Kenya Air Force. Seen taxi-ing back to NewCal's facility after its overhaul; departed for USA on 24 March 1989. Converted to Turbine Caribou; crashed on 27 August 1992 at Gimli, Manitoba, Canada, immediately after take-off. The three persons on board were killed.

Ex-5Y-BER, 204/Kenya Air Force. Test-flown for the first time after overhaul at Safi on 27 January 1989; departed for USA on 24 March 1989. Converted to Turbine Caribou; crashed on 27 August 1992 at Gimli, Manitoba, Canada, immediately after take-off. The three persons on board were killed.

Pictured here while still equipped with radial engines, this Caribou was later modified with PT-6 turboprops. On 27 August 1992 it crashed and burned at Gimli when the elevator gust lock reengaged itself on take-off. Ironically the flight was just meant to be for fun and to consume as much fuel as possible before the aircraft was weighed.

While there to witness the event, I was able to capture this close up of N400NC, moments before the wheels left the ground for the first time as the aircraft departed the Gimli airstrip on its "Maiden Flight," November 16, 1991. Sadly though, on August 27, 1992, the aircraft crashed at the Gimli Airport while on a test flight because an elevator gust lock re-engaged. This was due to a design flaw.
