On display at NMUSAF. The ninth P-80A was built as a XP-80B with an improved J33-A-17 turbojet. It was modified as a racer, receiving the designation P-80R. This included a smaller canopy, removal of all armament, re-contoured leading edges and an upgraded engine. Technicians working on the aircraft nicknamed it "Racey." It was flown by Col. Albert Boyd to set a new official world speed record of 623.753 mph on 19 Jun 1947 over Muroc Army Air Field, returning the record to the USA. The previous record of 615.8 mph was set on 7 Sep 1946 by Gp Capt E.M. Donaldson in a Gloster Meteor F.4.
