The first USAF fighter to have an afterburner, the F-94 Starfire was an all-weather interceptor derived from the F-80 and T-33 although the F-94C was much modified. Machine guns were replaced in the F-94C by a neat ring of 24 unguided rockets around the nose behind four doors that moved inwards for combat, as shown here. Firing them tended to flame out the jet engine, however, and they had to be moved to underwing pods.

Developed from the T-33 Shooting Star the F-94 was the first US all-weather jet interceptor and the first US production jet to have an afterburner. Lockheed produced 853 F-94s of 110 were the A-version and this one was retired directly from active service to arrive at the National Museum of the USAF during May 1957.

In reality this F-94C is 50-0980 but painted to represent a Starfire from 60th FIS, Otis AFB MA, circa late 1950s. She carried no guns but rather rockets in the mid-wing pods and more in the radome ring that were shielded by retractable doors.
