As far as I can determine, both Thunderbolts displayed in Musal are falsely painted. This one may be ex 44-19633 making its true serial 4120, but that is said to have been painted as 419662/B5.

The Universal was designed in 1963 as a new primary trainer for the FAB to replace the T-6 Texan and Fokker S-11/S-12. This is the prototype, at one time registered PP-ZTW and first flown on 29 April 1966. An initial order for 150 T-25s was increased in 1978 by an additional 28. A further development designated the YT-25B Universal II flew in 1978 but was not put into production. The T-25 was also used for counter-insurgency work and although replaced by the Tucano in both the advanced training and attack roles, it is still used as a primary and basic trainer.

Painted to represent an aerobatic demonstration aircraft of the Esquadrilha da Fumaça (Smoke Squadron), this is actually a Magister acquired from France and was No.196 in French service. The original 1720, one of seven Magisters to serve the team in Brazil from 1969, was exported to Senegal as 6W-SCA in 1974. Four others also went to the Senegal AF, the other two to Bangladesh. The Esquadrilha da Fumaça is still in existence, flying Texan IIs.

Delivered directly to the FAB as a J4F-2 serialled FAB 14 in November 1942. Assigned new serial 2680 and redesignated to UC4F2 by the FAB on 30 July 1945. Withdrawn from use in 1952 and stored. Registration PP-GQV reserved in the late 1950s or early 1960s, but not taken up. Became PP-HPU on 27 February 1963, but remained in storage. Transferred to the Museu Aeroespacial in 1977, where it was restored in its original markings as FAB 14. This aircraft is often incorrectly quoted as ex USN Bu34585 (which was c/n 1269).

Based on Aermacchi's proven MB.326 design, in 1970 Embraer acquired licence rights to build the AT-26 in Brazil to supersede the T-33 in the training role and also to provide offensive capability. They eventually produced a total of 182 EMB-326s - 167 for the FAB, nine for Paraguay and six for Togo. The Xavante name was in honour of the pre-Columbian native Brazilian warrior tribe. Interestingly two other AT-26s are preserved in Brazil, falsely marked as 4462.

The FAB flew approaching 100 Mitchells at various stages between 1942 and 1974, this one joining in 1946 and part of a batch of 64 aircraft purchased from the US in 1946 and 1947. Brazil declared war against the Axis powers in August of 1942 and FAB B-25s participated in the war, attacking U-boats in the southern Atlantic. They served from late 1944 with the 4 Grupo de Bombardeio Medio at Foraleza, while the 6 Regimento de Aviacao's 2 Group at Salvador operated a mix of B-25s, PV-1s and A-28s.

The FAB operated at least 80 C-47s over the years and this is one of several that have been preserved, having last served 6º ETA at Brasilia. They performed a great range of essential transports duties to overcome poor surface communications, maintaining the Correio Aéreo Nacional (military mail service) and carried civilians in areas where commercial air transport could not operate economically.

The main reason for my trip to Brazil was to capture this magnificent Viscount, knowing that it had been removed from the tight confines of its hangar for roof repairs after severe storm damage not long before Covid struck. It is one of two that were operated by the FAB's GTE on presidential flights from 1957, although the other was written off in 1967. Access was difficult as it was parked in a distant off-limits area, but all the efforts were worth it! I will now be working on a feature on the magnificent Musal collection for one of the well-known magazines.

The FAB received a total of 29 C-130s (11 C-130E, 16 C-130H and two KC-130H), the older ones going through two update programmes but now being replaced by the Embraer KC-390. This example was retired to the museum in 2014 and had been modernised to H standard from C-130E.

Brazil operated some 70 Meteors and this was the last, assembled at Parque de Aeronáutica de São Paulo with a middle fuselage that had been delivered with the original aircraft and parts from others, serialled 4399 and posted to 1st/1st GAvCa on February 1971. Later that year it was re-serialled 4460 and was delivered to Musal for preservation on 22nd April 1974, marking the last flight of a Brazilian Meteor. It was the only one to be operated in camouflage.
