In the first half of the 1970s, VMFA-115 was based at Iwakuni, Japan, and often operated out of Nam Phong, Thailand, in support of the Vietnam war. The unit's F-4Bs were replaced by F-4J models soon after this photo was taken. This particular F-4B was then converted to F-4N.

This legacy Hornet was delivered to the US Navy in Fiscal Year 1985. The Marine Corps received the aircraft during late 1988. But eight years later it returned to the Navy, as part of Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine, based at NAS China Lake (CA). Following duty with this test squadron it returned to the USMC where it served several Marine Fighter Attack Squadrons up to mid-2019. It is currently based at Fort Worth (TX) with VMFA-112.
