Raised at Jorhat on 01 Aug. 1963, the unit previously flew the Bell 47G, Chetak and Mi-8. It was awarded the President's Standard on 11 March 2014 for exceptional service during war and peace.

The HAL Prachand (in English "Fierce") is an indigenous built multi-role, light attack helicopter designed and manufactured by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under the project name LCH. The Prachand has been ordered by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army. HAL claims that the LCH's flight ceiling is the highest among all attack helicopters in the world. This was realized for the expected operation area in the north of India.
