The Grunau Baby III was a further development of the Grunau Baby IIb with a slightly longer wing and fuselage and the addition of a wheel. Schleicher built a series of 21 from 1951 to 1955 and also Meschenmoser built a series. But many more were amateur built by gliding clubs. D-4303 was built by Schleicher in 1951 and later handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe.

The Rhönadler was designed for Schleicher by Hans Jacobs and first flew in 1932. It became the first series-built high-performance glider in the world. Schleicher built 65 in total and an unknown number were built by gliding clubs and individuals. The last one built is the one shown here, built by Klaus Heyn from 1983 to 1986. It went to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe painted to commemorate D-GÜNTHER GROENHOFF from the 1930s.

Although only two prototypes of the HKS-1 were built, they had a big influence on the development of sailplanes after World War II because of a number of technical innovations and the very good results in contests. D-5555 was the second prototype and was built in 1954. In 1978 it was handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe.

Although sharing the Mü-13 model number with the Akaflieg München Merlin, the Mü-13E Bergfalke is a very different aircraft. As glider flying was at the time prohibited in Germany, the prototype of the Mü-13E was built by the Segelfliegergruppe Jenbach in Austria. The first flight was made as OE-0138 on 05-Aug-1951. Although the aircraft on the photo is painted as OE-0138, the museum says that it was built by FSC Giebelstadt in 1955/56 so this is probably not the real OE-0138.

The Meise was designed by Hans Jacobs in 1938 for the 1940 Olympiade in Helsinki and originally was named DFS Olympia. The Meise on the photo was built in 1955 by Schlaak and registered D-6145. In May-1958 it was reregistered D-5618 and in 1964 as D-4679. In Jan-1989 it was handed over to the museum. Early 2010 its later-type canopy was replaced by an original-type one and it was painted again with its earlier registration D-5618.

Octave Chanute in the USA was quite successful with his 1896 glider. In 1904 a slightly different version was built for the Saint Louis Exposition where it was flown daily from Oct. 7 to 25. After that it was shipped to France where it is now in the Musée de l'Air in Paris. The one shown here is a replica built by Carsten Brinkmeier, finished in Jun-2006. A few flight attempts were made, but for safety reasons no full flight was made. In Oct-2006 it was handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe.

The Rhönsperber was designed for Schweyer by Hans Jacobs and the prototype made its first flight in Mar-1935. The aircraft on the photo was built somewhere between 1935 and 1938 and its cn and original registration are unknown. It later became D-6262 until cancelled in Jul-1970. Then it went to Sammlung Welzhofer in Günzburg until acquired by the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe. To commemorate the first prototype D-Rhönsperber from 1935 the museum painted it in that aircraft's contemporary markings (except for the text on the fin).

Ferdinand Schulz built his FS-3 in 1922. He took part in the Rhön 1922 meeting but the technical commission did not allow him to fly in the contest for lack of structural rigidity. However, two years later, on May 18, 1924, he set a new world endurance record of 8 hours and 42 minutes with it. Unbelievable that somebody could sit on such a small seat for such a long time, unprotected against the cold wind, and without having eaten anything! The aircraft shown here is a replica built in 1975 by Klaus Heyn.
