Delivered to Bavaria in February 1971 as D-ALFA and transferred from Bavaria Germanair to Hapag-Lloyd in January 1979, joining BCal in October 1981. After the take-over by British Airways in 1988, a dramatic incident occurred in June 1990 when a cockpit window blew out and the captain was partially sucked out, only saved by the flight attendants holding onto his legs. A safe emergency landing was made at Southampton.
