This was Lufthansa's inaugural DC-10 service to Sydney. The media filming the event saw the DC-10 land on runway 07 and disappear into the spray and mist caused by heavy rain. When the aircraft did not reappear as expected, word came through it had overrun the runway. It took two tugs to extract it from the soft ground but there was no damage done.
