XX109 first flew in November 1972 and was the second production GR.1. It commenced flying with the A&AEE in May 1973 and was most famously used for a motorway takeoff and landing carried out on the M55. In 1986 it was flown into RAF Coltishall and retired to become a weapon-loading trainer. With the invasion of Kuwait, the preparations for war included trials of suitable camouflage and XX109 was selected to trial the desert pink scheme.
