The USAAC needed an aircraft capable of flying very slowly for observation and control of the battlefield and the autogyro seemed to the ideal solution. However, it was soon discovered that these aircraft lacked the performance necessary for military applications and due to the inability to hover they were soon superseded by the helicopter. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF. This photo is copyright © Alastair T. Gardiner, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
