A little faded from exposure to the elements in exacting climates. Bristling with a range of sensors for its environmental work. Carrying the name "Polar 5" and the logo and titles of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Germany, which carries out Arctic, Antarctic and Marine Research. The badge of the "International Polar Year 2007-2008" is still displayed on the fairing under its nose. This photo is copyright © David A.
