The McKinley Climatic Laboratory is both an active laboratory and a historic site located in Building 440 on Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. It was built late in the Second World War and first used as a refrigerated hangar for conducting cold weather tests on aircraft in May 1947. On the day this photo was taken, the inside temperature (as indicated by the large thermometer mounted on the hangar door) was -70F degrees when an unknown aircraft model was under test. In January 1985, MH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters of the 55th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron were based next-door to the Lab. This photo is copyright © Kenneth I.
