Dornier from INAS 550 "Flying Fish" arriving at Yelahanka in the evening during Aero India 2021 with flaps set to 20 degrees after an IAS approach of 85-90 kts. INAS 550 is the Indian Navy's oldest naval air squadron that was formed in 1959 out of the Fleet Requirements Unit (FRU). The unit was commissioned on the Alizé at Hyéres by Amb. Nawab Ali Yavar Jung on 21 March 1961 as IN's first ship-borne ASW/MR unit, flying off INS Vikrant. The "Cobras" transitioned to the Do-228 in Aug. 1991. True to their motto 'First In and Last Out', INAS 310 remains the Indian Navy's most decorated unit, having received three unit citations.

Formed in 1942, the Squadron has been in the thick of things during World War II, 1965, 1971 and Kargil. It was the first IAF Squadron to be equipped with the Mirage 2000 or "Vajra" in 1985, named after the divine weapon of Indra. The Battle Axes proved decisive over Kargil in 1999 with their pinpoint bombing accuracy to destroy Pakistani positions on mountain tops.
