This SP-2E was assigned to the Naval Air Reserve Training Unit at NAS Dallas, Texas. In 1967 there were three VP squadrons at Dallas, VP 701, 702, and 703. Prior to 1970 USN reserve squadrons didn't have aircraft assigned to them. The NARTU at the base was responsible for maintaining and allocating a/c to the reserve squadrons as needed. In 1970 Naval Air Reserve squadrons were reorganized and assigned their own aircraft in order to more closely match the capabilities of the active duty USN squadrons.
