The incredible jet bomber flying boat. SeaMasters were to form a US Navy nuclear strike force out on the oceans, possessing a Mach 0.9 dash speed at low level. This is the first prototype which first flew from Chesapeake Bay on 14 July 1955 but crashed on 7 December 1955. The second also crashed. Following six YP6M-1s, eight P6M-2 production aircraft were completed of which four were flown before the programme was cancelled in August 1959. Photo by: George Skadding / Life
