Originally designated F-86C, the YF-93 was larger and heavier than the Sabre and intended as an escort fighter. This is the first prototype, flown on 24 January 1950 as 48-317. It was fitted with flush NACA engine intakes but these were found to restrict the airflow at higher angles of attack. Along with the second YF-93, which had more conventional intakes, the aircraft was given over to NACA Ames for further study. Photo from: NASA
