Check the AIM-7 Sparrow medium-range semi-active radar homing air-to-air missile underneath the fuselage. The Sparrow was the West's principal Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missile from the late 1950s until the 1990s. The yellow stripe marking on this Sparrow denote the missile is a high explosive hazard, or a live missile as it is called. The 111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was part of the Texas Air National Guard. In December 1989, only some months after this picture was taken, the 111th FIS started receiving F-16C/D Fighting Falcons to replace their F-4Ds.
