To take this photo I clambered into the cockpit of the Yogya museum's Mil Mi-4. I landed back on the ground with a lot of respect for Mi-4 pilots.

As far as I know, this is the only surviving Ki-51, or Japanse Army Type 99 Assault Plane, or 'Sonia' to the Allies, or Guntei to the Indonesians. Its wreck was found in New Guinea in 1987, but it's painted as a Ki-51 used by the Indonesians against the Dutch after World War II. Radio mast is broken and pointing forward

A dozen Ki-43s, left behind by the Japanese army, were put to limited use by the Indonesians in their independence war against the Dutch. This aircraft was actually found later in New Guinea. It is carrying drop tanks. The cockpit canopy appears to be wrong.

This is A-1645 in fake markings of A-9446. Marked with the flags of nine Asian countries visited.

The Delfin basic trainer served in the Indonesian air force until 1983. Note the chicken emblem of the flying school, based here at Yogyakarta.

This P-51D/K, which has some of the Cavalier Mustang modifications, is painted as F-338, which shot down a CIA A-26 Invader off Ambon on 18 May 1958. Its actual identity is thought to be either F-361, F-365 or F-366, and the real F-338 is assumed to be on display at air force headquarters in Jakarta.

So we have this rare Russian fighter, once supplied by China, but the cockpit canopy is missing. Wait - let's cut up this Harvard canopy! She'll look like new!
