At the end of World War II, used to carry Japanese officers to a surrender ceremony at Labuan, Borneo. Aircraft shipped to the Australian War Memorial and stored at RAAF Fairbairn (Canberra). From 1965 to 1980 the fuselage was in a base children's playground. Fuselage moved to RAAF Point Cook in 1981 where it remained for 20 years. The Ki-54 (code name Hickory) was returned to Canberra in 2001 for storage. Until 1988, it was the only known Ki-54 in existence. The fuselage of another since located in China and in 2012, a more complete example was recovered from a Japanese lake.
