The MiG-21 came in many variants. One of the less known variants is the MiG-21S (for Saphir), which received this designation because it was fitted with a Sapfir-21 radar. The MiG-21S had an R11F2S-300 powerplant and could carry the GP-9 cannon pod. It had four underwing hardpoints. It served only with the Soviet Union and was never exported. It was produced from 1965 to 1968 and this example arrived in Monino in June 1971. This photo is copyright © Wim Sonneveld, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
