Frenchman Louis Paulhan was the first airman to fly from London to Manchester. He made one stop at Lichfield and landed in a field at Burnage to win Lord Northcliffe's £10,000 prize. He is seen just before touchdown at 5.45 a.m. in his pusher biplane, seated on the wing leading edge with fuel tank behind him. From Manchester Airport archive.
