The F-89 was first flown in 1948 and of the production run of 1,050, 682 were the F-89D variant which could carry 104 rockets in wing pods and had a new fire-control radar and computer system. From these, 350 were modified to F-89J to carry two Genie nuclear-armed rockets and four Falcon missiles. From 1955, 53-2610 operated from Otis AFB, MA and Dover AFB, DE and after conversion to F-89J, from Wurtsmith AFB, MI and Hector Field, ND.
