The SAML S.1 was a development of the German Aviatik B.1 which had been licence-built in Italy. It had more than double the horsepower of B.1 and although considered obsolete, remained in service until the end of World War I and beyond. In contrast, the Aviatik, a design that dated back to 1912, was largely gone by the end of 1916.
