In winter Alitalia took advantage of the lower temperatures to cut out the technical stop at Darwin and fly direct to Singapore. It meant some exciting departures on Sydney's then 2500m main runway. Here I-DIWM is less than 500m from the end of the runway. The DC-8 was sold in the US as N153FA in December 1976.
