In 1986, Aero Mercantil, a longtime dealer for Piper Aircraft in Guaymaral, Colombia, started the development of a single engine utility and passenger aircraft. Thus, the Gavilán was born, an all-metal high-wing box-shaped aircraft, with room for one pilot and seven passengers. In the end, only eleven of these aircraft were built, msn 007 was used by the Colombian air force as FAC5062. It was built around 2000 and retired by April 2008.

Three ex USAF C-26Bs were delivered to the Colombian air force in November 1997. FAC1240 was damaged after a few years of service in these colours and appeared in the museum in April 2003. The two others received substantial upgrades in 2002, until one of them was also damaged beyond repair in 2006 and stored at Rionegro and stripped for spareparts. Eventually, the last one transferred to the Colombian national police by 2018.

This is one of only three ex USMC Broncos delivered to the Colombian air force as spares source, the dozen active ones were all former USAF aircraft.
