Wittenoom was an asbestos mining town. As the danger of the substance became known the mines closed, the town emptied and the airport passed into history.

Wittenoom was famous for its scenic gorge and its asbestos mine. Dust from the latter caused the town and the airport to be abandoned.

VH-PWL was withdrawn from use in 2015.

VH-EIM ditched off Kangaroo Island, South Australia on March 8, 2000, after its engine failed.

VH-RAS was cancelled from the register in 2013 as damaged. The cause of this damage is not certain but in July 1994 it was damaged at Home Valley Station, Western Australia. At the time -RAS may have been seen as repairable and its registration was retained.

VH-PRJ was written off after a rejected takeoff at Nhill, Victoria, on July 25, 2005 resulted in it overrunning the runway. Photo taken at Wittenoom. The town once had a large population (peaked at 20,000) because of the nearby asbestos mines. Mining, the town and the airport were abandoned when the seriousness of the health problems caused by the mineral became known. Mine tailings were used as landfill in the town but despite this a few people have remained. At last count it had three residents.
