The registration is the same as that worn by an Air Canada B767 that became known as the 'Gimli Glider' after it ran out of fuel and made a dead-stick landing at that airport in 1983. The B767 was returned to service, but later retired and scrapped and some of the airframe of this RV-4 consists of metal salvaged at that time. There is a medallion on the rear cabin bulkhead commemorating the B767 story. In addition, the (now retired) Air Canada captain who landed the B767 was allowed to make a dead-stick landing of the RV-4 at Gimli (CYGM) - just to prove it was not a fluke, I guess.
