Initially developed as replacement for the Luftwaffe's fleet of Piaggio 149 trainers. It came out best in a comparison with the Beechcraft T-34 and Pilatus PC-7, but no orders were placed as the Piaggio 149 was still deemed adequate for the Luftwaffe's needs. The first prototype flew (which this may be, considering the c/n) on October 27, 1977. Despite the lack of Luftwaffe orders, RFB continued production, but in the end only 50 were built.
