This R-Class Zeppelin made its first flight on 22nd February 1917 and made 15 reconnaissance missions around the Eastern Front and the Baltic Sea and (or including?) 3 attacks that dropped a total of 6,000 kilograms (13,000 lb) of bombs. In 1920 it was ordered to be transferred to France as part of war reparations and used there for testing and evaluation. Only the rear engine gondola survives and is on display at this super museum.

Whilst this photograph looks more like a part of a ship, it is the rear engine nacelle of a Zeppelin airship that was built for the German Airforce during WWI in 1917. It was delivered to France as war reparations and was used by the French to assess the capabilities of the Zeppelins until it was grounded following the crash of a sister machine in 1923.

198 m (650 ft) long and powered by six 240-hp engines giving a maximum speed of 103 km/h (64 mph), LZ-113 flew bombing and recconnaissance missions in Word War I. This fascinating exhibit is the rear gondola. The airship could be flown from here in an emergency - note the steering wheel.
