The first of two prototypes of the SZD-43 Orion glider, first flew on December 30, 1971. A second prototype was built, now on display as a monument in Leszno. Flying these two gliders, Jan Wróblewski took first and Franciszek Kępka third in the Standard Class at the 1972 World Gliding Championships in Yugoslavia. Series production was not undertaken due to the development of the superior, all-composite Jantar glider at the same time.
