The Liberator Liner could not compete against the DC-4 and Constellation. Built under a US Navy contract the first XR2Y-1 prototype was evaluated as a cargo aircraft by AA for three months. According to some sources, this took place in 1946, but according to others both airframes had already been scrapped by then. Incompletely applied here, the individual aircraft name City of Salinas was chosen.
