Designed for observation and ground attack missions while France fought the Algerian War, the Voltigeur first flew on 5 June 1958, one year before the similar Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. This was the first prototype which had Cyclone piston engines. One further SE.116 and one SE.117 were built with Bastan turboprops.
