VFP-63 was conducting a pilot carrier qualification detachment using an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Mexico and staging out of NAS Kingsville. When not assigned to a detachment aboard a carrier, the squadron aircraft wore the VFP-63 PP tail code. When assigned to a detachment the tail code used was normally that of the Carrier Air Wing they were supporting.
