Construction of the first airport near Lhasa began in 1955 at an altitude of 4200 m (13,800 ft). An Ilyushin Il-12 and a Convair CV-240 were the first aircraft to land at Damxung. There was no telephone and no electricity at the airport. Requiring constant runway repairs, it did not last long, but satellite imagery shows a brand new airport built at this very site circa 2020!
