Lord Howe airport was built by the Army Corps of Engineers and opened in 1974. It allowed Ansett to retire its two ageing Short Sandringham flying boats. It was not possible to make a runway long enough for the widely used Fokker F27s and GA aircraft, such as the Super King Airs, and DH Herons took over the route. More recently the Dash 8 has been the mainstay of services from and to Sydney. This photo is looking along r/w 10.
