On 16.8.69, Darryl Greenamyer broke the three kilometre speed record at 483 mph in this highly modified Bearcat "Conquest 1", which later became this "American Jet". The previous record had been set in 1939 in a Messerschmitt Me 209. Greenamyer won the National Air Races six times with this aircraft before donating it to the Smithsonian in 1977 This photo is copyright © Richard Vandervord, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
