On 21 November 1981 an Italian Air Force F-104 Starfighter and Ferrari's Formula 1 car of the 1981 season raced eachother over the runway of the Istrana-Treviso Air Base. The Ferrari, driven by Formula 1 driver Gilles Villeneuve, won the match. On 17 September 1989 the Italian Air Force decided to commemorate this race by donating this F-104G to Ferrari, painted in the well-known red Ferrari colours.
