Essendon was Melbourne's main airport from 1921 until 1970. It at the time of the photo the base for the then two major domestic airlines, Ansett-ANA and TAA. Most Victorians heading to Asia, Europe and North America in the 1960s were forced to transit Sydney because Essendon was unable to handle 707s and DC-8s.
