At the time this shot was taken this special trials Buccaneer was operated by the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at Boscombe Down but was usually based at RAE West Freugh in South West Scotland where it spent the vast majority of its operational life. It was one of three Buccaneers (XW986/7/8) built specially for weapons trials work. All three spent most of their time at West Freugh and stared out in the dark green / yellow / white paint scheme seen here but XW986 & 987 later gained the more typical "raspberry ripple" red / white / blue scheme. 988 was never repainted.
