Optand was develop by the Swedish Air Force as a forward operating base as early as the beginning of World War 2. During the Cold War, a system of dispersed operating bases around the main air bases was established. Optand was set up as part of F4 Jämtlands flygflotilj's Bas 90 STOL satellites. The task was to refuel and rearm the fighters for a fast turn-around to the battle. The field was camoflaged with the building looking like farm houses and the open areas were even planted with crops. Today many buildings remain and are in use by flying and a para clubs.
